1. 简介

From Image to STL: The Basics(从图像到 STL:入门) 是一个面向最初级用户的上手练习项目,带你把最基础、最常用的完整流程从概念到动手完整跑通:从一张三维图像,一步步得到一个可 3D 打印的 STL 模型。

灰度体数据 → ROI(二值)

导出 STL/OBJ/PLY 各版本均可。

1. Introduction

From Image to STL: The Basics is a hands-on project for absolute beginners that teaches and runs the most basic, most common complete workflow end to end: from a single 3D image, step by step, to a 3D-printable STL model.

This feature is provided by a third party (Prototype Labs / Apps), not officially developed or supported by Dragonfly. The completion certificate is also unofficial — for personal record only.

2. The whole pipeline (4 steps)

Step

Input → Output

In a nutshell

1. Load image

file → greyscale volume

read the 3D image in

2. Threshold

greyscale volume → ROI (binary)

pick the object out by brightness

3. To a mesh

ROI → triangle mesh

wrap a surface around the picked region

4. Export STL

mesh → .stl file

save as a universal 3D format

3. The five tabs

1. Concepts — the pipeline, pixels/voxels, grey values, resolution & units.

2. Load image — one-click sample image (ball/cylinder/cube-with-hole/dumbbell), or use a loaded Channel.

3. Threshold → ROI — manual range or Otsu auto-threshold; creates and shows a real Dragonfly ROI.

4. ROI → Mesh — marching cubes builds a triangular surface mesh, published as a Dragonfly mesh.

5. Export STL — trimesh writes the .stl file (binary or ASCII).

4. Two design features

  • One-click AND learn-by-hand: every step has a '▶ action button' that actually does it, plus a '🖱 How to do this in the Dragonfly GUI' pop-up that walks you through doing the same thing by hand in Dragonfly (menu paths, panels, right-click items).
  • As many concept pop-ups as possible: segmentation, threshold, Otsu, histogram, ROI, surface mesh, marching cubes, voxel-level vs sub-voxel, STL, ASCII vs binary, units pitfalls — each has a short, beginner-friendly '📖 Learn' pop-up.

5. How to use

1. On 'Load image' click 'Create a sample image' (or pick a Channel).

2. On 'Threshold' click 'Otsu auto-threshold' (or set low/high by hand) to make a ROI.

3. On 'ROI → Mesh' click 'Convert ROI to a surface mesh'.

4. On 'Export STL' click 'Export STL…' and choose where to save.

5. Finish on the 'Certificate' tab by entering your name to generate a completion certificate.

6. Requirements

No install, no internet, no GPU, no venv. The core actions run in-process on Dragonfly's own numpy/scikit-image/trimesh (thresholding makes a real ROI via getAsROIWithinRange, marching cubes builds the mesh, trimesh writes the STL). STL/OBJ/PLY export works on all versions.
